Weekly Wishes #20

Last Week's Wishes

  • Read. Currently reading The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and although I didn't finish it over the weekend I'm pretty close and should be done by this weekend. Such a good read. I definitely recommend it.
  • Try a new recipe this week. I did! I made Salmon Cakes and they were delsih. Served them with some home-made ranch dressing and zucchini fritters.
  • Go to the pool. The evidence of my pool excursion.

I totally accomplished all my goals last week. Wohoo!!!

This Week's Goals
  • Cut back on the dates. I tried this before and it worked now I have relapsed. I love dates, but they're full of sugar and it doesn't help when you have a huge weight loss goal you want to accomplish.
  • Distress my own denim. Ok so I've been wanting a pair of black distressed denim for a long time but I'm cheap and refused to pay the big bucks for ripped up jeans. I found a pair for less than 15 dollars (that's my kind of price, lol!) and I'm gonna do it myself. Wish me luck.
  • Organize my closet. Can you say "Hot Mess"?
Well hope you have a great week. Head over to The Nectar Collective to share your weekly wishes.

Ciao!

Words of Inspiration

I am working on this.

It's not the easiest thing to do but with effort and prayer it can happen.
There are so many things that I would love to change in my life but at the moment, they are beyond my control.

If I were to sit around and think about them, I'm telling you I would be absolutely miserable, but I am challenging myself to be happy despite my circumstance.

Wishing you many happy days.

Summer Inspired

The count down to summer break is well under way in my head.
Dreaming of New York summer days. Hanging out at the park, eating outside at a cute cafe, street fairs and yummy food.
I am so excited !!!

I've been nosing around the 'net and have been collecting bits and pieces of the fashionable things that have caught my eye to store in my mental rolodex.

Summer is always the perfect time to try something new.
It would be great to give my style a little sprucing up, cause I have definitely fallen into a rut.
I used to be so stylish...sigh. Oh for those days!!
Hopefully it isn;t too late to get my fashion mojo back.

Here's what's currently on my radar.

chic and easy footwear
So that's it for my little summer list of inspiration.
What's on your list?

Weekly Wishes #19

Hey lovelies,
thanks for stopping by for another Weekly Wishes link up.

I missed last week's link up because time just seemed to get away from me and it was too late to post or I thought it was.
Anywho, here are the goals from the previous week.

P.S. Can't believe April is almost over. I am kinda happy that the weeks seem to be flying by. I'm that much closer to going home for the summer.
I can't even express to you just how enormous my desire is to be home.

Previous Goals
  • Clean my apartment.  I did this and have been doing a really good job of keeping it clean and tidy.Everyday I straighten up so that it doesn't build up to a hot mess. So far so good.
  • Begin journaling again. That didn't happen.
  • Get in at least 3 days work out. Check. Actually went 4 times.
This Week's Goals
  • Read. I just started The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. Would love to finish it by next weekend.
  • Try a new recipe this week.
  • Go to the pool. I have a lovely pool in my building and my friend is always begging me to go. I should take advantage of it while the weather is not homicidal. It's nice to just go relax with my book and unwind after work.

That's it. I'm a little low on motivation to begin anything new or make too many changes this week. I think I've accomplished  a lot of the things I set out to do in the past so I'm gonna take it easy this week.

I hope you guys have a great week and accomplish whatever goals you set for yourself.
Ciao!!!

Maxi Skirt and Cropped Top

Hey lovelies,
I recently bought a similar maxi skirt from J.Crew and now I'm thinking about ways to style it.
The crop top trend doesn't seem to be loosing steam and I actually like it.
Hopefully I can loose some flab before summer gets here so I can rock an outfit like this one. I love the balance between the maxi skirt and the midriff baring top. You don't have to expose a lot of skin, just a little is still alluring and sexy.

Can't wait to be home in NY for the summer.

DIY Scalp Treatment

One of the things I've become obsessed with lately is making my own beauty products.
Besides being much cheaper, there are no added mystery ingredients. You know exactly what is in the products you're using.

I've been on the lookout for a good scalp treatment. I have psoriasis and it is exacerbated by harsh chemicals. Since going natural, my scalp has gotten a lot better but sometimes I have flare ups. I need something that will help to keep those flare ups at a minimum plus promote growth.

This is not an original recipe by any means, I'm sure you can google hair tonics, scalp treatments or anything hair related and find similar recipes. You can add to it and modify to suit your preference. This is my version of choice.

I've been using coconut oil for ages for everything. I use it to cook, to cleanse my face, for oil pulling and as a hair moisturizer and conditioner. It is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft and provide moisture to dry tresses. It is great for the scalp because of the anti-bacterial properties, so say good-bye to any icky scalp issues you may have. It also helps to prevent hair loss and grows your hair (long hair anyone?).

Lemon juice is something I've been exploring in my quest to become healthier. I drink a cup of warm water  with lemon juice every morning. After doing some research I realized that lemon juice can be used on the skin and scalp so I've been incorporating it into my beauty regime as well as my diet.
As a scalp treatment it combats dry itchy scalp, promotes hair growth and cuts down on oily scalp.
Check out this great article on HuffingtonPost about the benefits of lemon juice.

If you have the same dreaded scalp issues or you just want a way to maintain a healthy scalp which leads to healthy hair, give this recipe a try.

What you'll need:
2 tablespoons lemon juice
melted organic extra virgin coconut oil  ( I use 1 tablespoon bc my hair is short)
2 drops rosemary oil
2 drops tea tree oil

 Method
Mix all ingredients together. Apply to dry hair making sure to coat hair from roots to tips.
Saturate hair and give your scalp a nice little massage to allow the oil mixture to really penetrate and promote blood circulation.
Cover  with a plastic shower cap for 30-60 minutes.
Rinse with moisturizing conditioner and apply leave-in.
Style as preferred.

I hope this helps. My hair has definitely improved. My scalp is less itchy and I rarely have any shedding or breakage.
Let me know what you think.

Life Lately

I know it's been a little quiet around here these days. I've been re-acclimating to work, which after a two weeks breaks is a challenge. My sleep pattern was a mess and I've been suffering for it. Unfortunately between trying to get caught up on sleep, working out and cooking, this poor little blog suffered. My apologies.

So here's what I've been up to these days

+ Working out. I've been really trying to be consistent about fitting fitness into my life so that it becomes a habit. I feel proud of the work I did last week and hope that I will continue to work hard to achieve my 15 lbs weight loss goal over the next 3 months.

+ Cooking. I never really realized how much I love cooking. I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with how much I love to eat. Since it would cost me a fortune to eat out the way I like to eat plus keep it all healthy and Paleo friendly, I've been cooking up a storm.
Steak with White Sweet Potato Fries and Paleo Mayo

+ Shopping. My lovely friend gifted me with a J. Crew gift-card for my b-day. There have been a ton of sales and I was conflicted on how to spend my money. In the end I got a couple pieces that would add nicely to my closet.
pleated Maxi skirt. Cute for summer and will transition nicely here in Abu Dhabi

cute maxidress. Love the print

That's it folks. Besides work of course, this is how I've been spending my time. Oh and catching up on The Mindy Project and New Girl. Am I the only one who loves these shows????

Ciao! Have a great weekend.

adventures in Pokhara

Boats on Phewa Lake

We loved Pokhara. It is the perfect escape from the bustle and pollution of Kathmandu.

Such an easy chill vibe and the Phewa lake and mountains that surround this little city are nothing short of breath taking.
We wished we had stayed a bit longer since on the morning we made the 6 A.M ascent to the top of Sarangkot, the sky was very cloudy and we were not able to experience the awe-inspiring sunrise that this mountain is known for. You can see several Himalayas from this vantage point.
We were supremely disappointed but still happy to have had the opportunity so see the views of the sleeping city shrouded in clouds.

It was a hike to get to the top (still felt it a few days later) but totally worth it. Even on a cloudy day the view of the city  is spectacular.

love his little face!

seen on the way down from Sarangkot
Pokhara was just what we needed. The air was cleaner and there were so many cute little restaurants and shops along the lakefront road. Now I see why the hippies love it here. It's easy to forget about the troubles of the real world and spend your evenings watching the sun set over the lake.

One of the best memories was finding ourselves at some random bar one night listening to a Nepali band do covers of Pink Floyd, Adele, Eagles and  Bruno Mars to name a few. There were some older Europeans attempting to dance on the little dance floor and two Indian guys who lacked not even a smidgen of rhythm but didn't care. They were dancing up a storm and having the time of their lives. Not even gonna front, it was really entertaining to watch.
A lady behind me began questioning why I wasn't dancing (I'm Black so of course I can dance....WRONG!), she finally pressured  convinced me to go and I made L go with me. We actually had a blast dancing and being silly.

Check out the rest of the pics below to see how we spend our time in Pokhara.
