Loving Lately

Mac eyeliner in Fascinating
I know I might be a little late on the gravy train but I recently discovered white eyeliner.
Well, I knew about it but I've recently incorporated it into my arsenal of make-up products. For some reason I thought that I couldn't pull it off.

Then one day, I was meeting up with a friend at the mall. While waiting I decided to stop in at the Mac store just to look at all the pretty colors.
The sales lady was wearing white eyeliner and it was so pretty on her. It just made her eyes pop and I thought "hey I want my eyes to pop too."
I asked her some questions and before I knew it, she had me in her chair and was applying white eyeliner on me.

Surprisingly, it looked cute on me too. Who woulda thunk?  Of course I just had to have it. Anything that makes me look cute needs to be in my life. Right?

I've been loving it. It's an easy way to brighten up your face especially if you don't want to wear a lot of make-up. I dust my face with bronzer, throw this eyeliner on and mascara on both top and bottom lashes. I do my brows and put some gloss on and viola, an easy face without a lot of work.

If you're unconvinced about just how cute this can be, check out these lovelies rocking the look. You can bold or subtle depending on your mood.

You don't have to go the MAC route, there are plenty of less expensive versions to experiment with. NYX and Sephora have their versions.

A Conversation About Race

I've always prided myself on being able to make friends with just about anybody regardless of color, creed or background.
As long as you're a cool person, I can roll with you.

For the most part, conversations with my friends are pretty easy going with few arguments. I hate conflicts with people and I typically hate getting into debates. I avoid them like the plague actually. When I realize that a discussion is heading down the road of a debate, I get off at the nearest exit. To me they're usually pointless and people end up getting offended, over-heated and worked up with no real resolution.

I am open to other people's beliefs, ideas and perspectives.
I don't feel the need to sway other peoples' minds or convert them to my own beliefs. We each believe what we believe and we work it out. I don't think we have to be on the same page in every area of our lives to be friends. That would be absolutely boring.

Even radical differences in religious beliefs aren't a big deal for me when forming friendships. As long as we respect each other and don't do anything that may be considered disrespectful, the relationships works.

They say that there a certain subjects you should never discuss with friends. These are religion, politics, money and I'm sure race should be on that list.

I usually break that rule on the other topics but I try to never get into debates about race/racism or anything along that vein. I especially don't like to have these conversations with people of other races.
From personal experience, I find that people a. don't care b. find a way to invalidate the experiences of others c. feel that "we" need to get over it
d. don't think the problems of racism still exist and think that people of color just need to just get their 'ish together and fix their problems instead of blaming others.

Let me preface by saying that I don't believe that everyone not of my race feels this way. If that was the case I would have only friends of my own race.

Haha, so here I am choosing to bring it up on a public blog, definitely not the way to avoid a debate.

I  was having a conversation with a friend who falls into the last category, actually probably all of them. Like most of these types of conversations, it started out innocently enough and before you realize it, something is said that acts a the catalyst for a debate. Honestly didn't see it coming or I would have abandoned ship.
I was admittedly a bit annoyed with him. In my mind he wasn't being open to understanding the points that I was trying to make. I'm sure he felt the same way about me. That's usually the case right?
Finally we had to end the conversation because it wasn't going anywhere. At one point I was like "Wait, what are we arguing about?" Of course the original point had been lost in the convolution. We agreed that it was better to end the convo.
The reality is that unless you have lived through an experience or it has directly impacted your life in some way (usually negatively), it just isn't part of your schema. You can easily dismiss it as being insignificant or unfounded.

I know people are entitled to their opinions and like I've said it usually doesn't bother me but in this case it really has stayed on my mind. I'm still processing the conversation and the biggest question in my head is whether or not two people can be friends who have such glaringly different perspectives on an issue.
Actually it has more to do with me than with him. I'm sure he could go on being my friend because the conversation ended and it probably has already left his mind (my assumption, I could be totally wrong) but now that I know what he thinks, it will always be in the back of my mind.

Chances are we will continue to be friends because he has never disrespected me and I understand that the issues of racism (notice I didn't say discrimination, which is a different ingredient in the pie)  have not been part of his personal or cultural experiences and he really doesn't understand the impact or implications.
I can't make his or anyone else's ignorance my problem. I would be miserable and angry.
That's just not how I choose to live my life.

This is one of those situations with no clear cut answer/resolution. I'm going to have to file this under "complicated" and call it a day.

Currently Craving

As I was perusing my favorite website's (J. Crew) shoe selection in search of the illusive pair of black sandals for the summer, I happened upon their new collection of pumps.

I fell head over heels with the Sophia Webster for J. Crew collection. I have no idea who this Sophia Webster is, but I do know she is skilled in the art of shoe design. The collection is beautiful and just really cool.
I love shoes that are bit fun and whimsical and make a statement. The collection is just that. These shoes will get you noticed.

Here are my faves. Head over and check them out for yourself.
I'll wait until they go on sale, not sure where I would wear them to though.
My life of wearing heels seems to be over...for now anyway.

How cute are these?
I love the white ones the most. Sexy huh?

weekly wishes #24

Happy Memorial Day! (I know I'm a little late)
Wishing all those who served and are serving many thanks for all they've done for the US of A.

Let's get into my goals past and present shall we.

Last Week's Goals
  • Get through the week without breaking down and eating  plantains or dates. win!
  • Read. This did not happen
  • Drink a cup of lemon water every morning. I did this every morning. Such a great way to get the morning started.
  • Sleep or just lay in bed and do nothing. I didn't sleep much but I did a lot of laying around and just doing things at my own pace with not a care in the world. I'd say this was a success.
This Week's Goals

  • Do laundry. This includes washing them and actually putting them away. Anyone notice a trend?
  • Have my car washed and vacuumed. It is beyond  filthy.
  • Mop the floor. I abhor doing this but it needs to be done and I can't put it off any longer.

Those are all I can muster up for this week.
Wishing you all a successful week.

Look Hair

My hair is growing y'all!!!
 So exciting.
I was just playing around and this little up-do resulted from my shenanigans.

It's good to have a different style option and to be able to do something different every once in a while.

Can you see how pleased I am?

Life Lately

Life isn't perfect but it is as good as you make it.
I try to make the best of each day and live with gratitude.
One thing I know is, I am truly blessed to have met some great people here who have helped to make this experience memorable.

Over the weekend I got to spend time with a few of the special people in my life.

Spending time with this handsome fellow.

Hanging with my lady. Life would be a lot duller without her.

Went out for Korean food with these lovelies.

I had so much fun! Loads of laughter and great conversation.
Of course food was involved.

Weekly Wishes #22

Only 8 weeks standing between me and my much anticipated Summer in New York.
Counting down the days until I am home with my mommy and my friends.
I've already begun setting up play dates with them and it is making me even more anxious to be home.
I must have patience, this is what I try to remind myself everyday.

Last Week's Goals
  • Organize my closet. Let's try this again. check!
  • Replace breakfast with a green smoothie everyday this week. check!
  • work out 5 times and check!!
I am so pleased with myself. Last week was a much better week goal wise and I feel accomplished. Go me!

Even go up and worked out Saturday morning.

Ok so let's get into my goals for this week.

  • workout on Saturday
  • don't go to the grocery store until the end of the week. I want to use everything that I already have in stock and if I don't have it, I will improvise.
  • write 3 articles for the website I write for. I've been slacking on this. The strange thing is that I get paid for these articles so you would think that I'd be cranking them out.
Anyway that's all folks.

Wishing you a productive and successful week!

Food Lately

Curried Veggies with Shrimp and Fried Plantains

Cashew Butter Chicken Lettuce Wrap with Cucumber Slaw
Breakfast: Bacon and Spinach Omelette with Cucumber, Tomato and Asparagus

Cauliflower Mash with left-over Cashew Butter Chicken

I've been cooking up a storm lately.
At the beginning of the month I made a commitment to stick to my Whole30 clean eating plan and lose the 15 pounds I've set out to lose.

These are just a few of the dishes I've been making. Seriously folks, I don't know if my taste buds are biased but everything I cook is amazing. LOL

Also, I've been obsessed with fried plantains. I pretty much eat them every day and convince myself that since I fry them in coconut oil , they're healthy. Oh the lies we tell ourselves. I need to stop, but plantains are just so bloody delicious that I can't.

My body is loving being back on Paleo. I can honestly say I am at my best when I follow this lifestyle. I am healthy and feel awesome overall.
My belly has lost that bloated puffy look and I feel leaner. The weight will go if I continue to eat clean and work out.
Wish me luck!

Happy Mother's Day

I am truly blessed to have an awesome mommy.
She is such a loving and caring person. She is always smiling and radiating joy.
She has taught me to be fearless and to go after my dreams even when they seemed challenging. Definitely wouldn't be the person I am today without her love and support.

Wishing her and all the other mommies out there a Happy Mother's Day.

May 7, 2014

I am in search of some new black sandals for the summer. The pair I have now look like a puppy's chew toy. Not cute.
There is really only one store I shop at, especially online. That's J.Crew.
I know my size and I feel that the fit is usually consistent.
J.Crew never disappoints so that's where I turned in search of my perfect sandals.

So here are my current picks.
I love that the ankle-strap sandals have to gold details but this may also be it's downfall because I won't be able to wear it with everything.

The gladiators seem more versatile. It's two toned and I can totally wear it with a bunch of different outfits.

One is blingy and the other is super simple. Not sure which one to get.
I'm so conflicted.

What do you think?

Weekly Wishes #21

Happy Monday lovelies and a happy Cinco de Mayo to you all.
Wow, I am beat. This weekend was awesomely busy. From birthday celebrations, a baby shower and tea dates I was rarely at home.
It was great spending time with my friends, I always feel so much better about life.
There was a lot of eating out and a lot of eating things that were very un-Paleo. I fell off the wagon hard. Bumps and bruises to show.
I've picked myself, dusted off the cake crumbs and heading into May with my eye on the prize at the end of this weight-loss tunnel.

Last Week's Goals
  • Cut back on the dates.   I did manage to cut back.
  • Distress my own denim.  Didn't happen
  • Organize my closet. nope
This Week's Goals

  • Organize my closet. Let's try this again.
  • Replace breakfast with a green smoothie everyday this week.
  • work out 5 times

Goals for April
  • Complete another round of Whole30. fail. I had too many social events towards the end of the month. Birthdays, baby showers, and a bunch of other stuff came up and I lost focus of my weight loss goals.
  • Focus on my spending habits and cut back on frivolous spending.  fail
  • Pay off one debt back home.  yes!!! I did it, one down and a million more to go.
  • Read 3 books.  fail
Oh my, April was one big epic fail. I'm really going to have to be more focused this month on these goals.

May's Goals

  • Whole30. Okay this is happening this month, I'm going all the way. No excuses.
  • Lose 5 pounds
  • Workout on Saturdays. I always skip this day but I have nothing else going on and should really make the time to get a work out in.

Wishing you all a great week. Good luck with all your goals.

what's in your make-up bag?

Hey lovelies,
hope you are having a wonderful week so far. I am battling a sinus infection that's causing my teeth to hurt. Bizarre but true. I hate feeling yucky.

How funny is this picture?  I found it while browsing Instagram and had to borrow it. It's horrific right?
There are days when I certainly feel like this.

I'll admit that I am one of those ladies who rarely goes out "naked". I have to do a little sprucing up to my face before heading out the door. I need at minimum a little foundation and some powder. Trust me, I am doing a public service. Can you say "GREASE BALL"? Cause that's all you will see.
There are some people who are fortunate or brave enough to be able to roll out of bed and out the door but I ain't one of them...more power to that select lot.

Do I think I need to wear make-up all the time? Not really but I feel a bit more confident when I know I look "pretty". When I get done up, I definitely feel prettier.

Experimenting with all the colors and the different looks is something I really enjoy. I love that I can change my look with a little lipstick or eyeliner depending on my mood.

Luckily, I've managed to get my routine down to five minutes for my everyday look. I moisturize, put on foundation then mineral powder. I fill in my eyebrows and then throw some blush on. A little eyeliner and mascara
and I'm done.
It definitely doesn't always have to be a process or huge task that takes up a lot of time.

I've been using the same brand of foundation and powder for almost a decade now. I only use MaryKay for oily skin. I love how natural it is and I don't need to use a ton.
I also really love Tarte for blushes and some MaryKay. Everything else is whatever is on sale.

Lipstick is becoming my new favorite thing. I love reds. Ruby Woo by MAC is my current obsession. I practically live in it.
Here is my carry around make-up bag.

1. Tide pen 2. MaryKay Lipgloss 3. Tarte Lip Stain 4. MAC Ruby woo 5. Powder compact and brush 6. Oil blotting sheets 7. Mirror 8. eye liner

What are your favorite products? What's in your make-up bag that you can't live?
