A Dozen Tales That Swept Me Away

Hey lovelies,

One of my favorite things in the world to do is read. It's just so exciting!!!
Nerd much?
I never understand when people tell me that reading is boring. I just don't get it.

Needless to say I have read thousands of books. Many have shad a lasting impression on me. Some because they've made me laugh and others becasue they've made me cry.

So I borrowed this idea from Endless Bliss. It inspired me to share my list of most influential/ treasured/beloved books.

Here are some of my favorite books. I'm going to whittle it down to just a few. Let me just say, this is super hard. These are just the ones that come most immediately to mind.

1. Invisible Man- Ralph Ellison
I read this book many years ago but it left such an indelible mark on me. I love the language and how Ralph Ellison managed to capture the human experience with such skill. It's such a sad story but an excellent read.

2. Jane Eyre- Charlotte Bronte
I love this story. I love all the twists and turns of their tragic love. I may have read this story several times. One of my all time faves.

3. A Confederacy of Dunces- John Kennedy Toole
Complete hilarity. I laughed myself silly and I always recommend this to anyone who asks what they should read. GET IT!

4. Island of the Blue Dolphins- Scott O'dell
This is one of my favorite childhood books. Loved it and it will definitely be on the shelves in my home for my kids.

5. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings- Maya Angelou
It's Maya Angelou, that's all I'm saying.

6. Me Talk Pretty One Day- David Sedaris
I love anything by this man. He is clever, funny and talented.

7. Interpreter of Maladies- Jhumpa Lahiri
Beautifully written. She is such a skillful writer and I am smitten.

8. The Secret Garden- Frances Hodgson Burnette
Another childhood fave. I remember hiding under a table and reading this when I was about 10.

9. The Fault in Our Stars- John Green
A newbie but a fave already. I also saw the movie and it was one of the rare occasions that I think the movie captured the essence of the book. This made me bawl my eyes out.

10. A Princess of Mars- Edgar Rice Burroughs
This was a huge step outside of what I typically go for being all science fictiony but I really enjoyed it, maybe becasue it was a love story. Couldn't put it down.

11. Shane- Jack Shaefer
My mom introduced me to this book when I was about 12 years. She was an English teacher and loved it. I read it and fell in love as well. Who doesn't love a cowboy?

12. The Year of Magical Thinking- Joan Didion
This made me bawl. Such honesty and beauty in her prose.

+1 First Comes Love- Marion Winik
This is the ultimate love story. Raw and honest, it has stuck with me for over a decade.

There are so many more books I could have put but I would be here all day composing this list and you would be reading it all day. Ain't nobody got time for that.
I would love to hear your faves as well. I'm alwasy on the look out for new reads.
Ciao!

Weekly Wishes # 34

Hey lovelies,
I hope your week has been exciting and amazing thus far.
All is well over here in my world for the most part.
I am feeling a little ill and I'm not sure if it's legit illness or my sinuses acting ridiculous.
I wouldn't be surprised if I caught something from my kids. They are so gross! Snot everywhere and they just cough and sneeze without covering. I sometimes yell at them to cover and of course they have no clue what I'm saying, lol. I make the most grossed out face I can to shame them but that doesn't work either, they just think I'm being funny for their entertainment. God help me!

Anywho, check out my awesomeness from last week.

  • I need to get back in the gym.  I am so proud of myself. I went 6 times last week. I also started running using the C25K marathon training app.
  • Get back into creating and using my meals plans. You know what they say.  I have no used the meal plan but I have been really good with my eating.
  • Laundry.  Didn't happen. UGH!
  • Clean the floors.  Yay, done. Nice clean floors, you could eat stuff that's fallen on the floors over here, I do it all the time.

This week's goals.
  • Continue with the running program. It's 3 days a week and if I can get those days in as well as some additional weigh training I should definitely be well on my way to a fitter and healthier me.
  • Laundry. Here we go again. You would think that I have to drag my laundry to a laundry mat like I had to when I lived in NY. Not the case, I  have a washer in my apartment. I just can manage to load it. This week is the week I'll make it happen.
That's it folks, short and sweet.

Wednesday Words of Wisdom

Suffering, challenges, difficulties are all part of life. They are unavoidable. They can either break us or make us better. How we react determines the effect they have on our spirits.
The choice is ultimately ours.
Wishing you are wonderful and positive week.

Weekly Wishes #33

Hey lovelies,
Happy Monday! I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
Mine was a lot  good and a little bad. I spent both Thursday and Friday hanging out with friends which was wonderful. It was great catching up with these lovely ladies.
However, I was an emotional mess on Saturday. That time of the month. Ugh.
I wanted to cry for everything and it felt like the world was ending. Thankfully I feel so much better now.

Work is coming along. Progress is slow and I have to pray for the strength and mental courage to deal with the kiddies. They run and they yell and they don't speak English. I cannot function in chaos.
Anyway, enough of that there complaining. I am thinking positively. I've done it before and it will all fall into place.

So let's get into my goals for this week.

  • I need to get back in the gym. It's been awhile so my goal is to get in 3 times this week.
  • Get back into creating and using my meals plans. You know what they say. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
  • Laundry. Why is it piling up? Not good.
  • Clean the floors. Seriously, you'd judge me if you came over.

I just realized that I never share what my September goals are. Wouldn't want to deprive you of that pleasure, so here goes ;-)

  • Complete 21 Day Sugar Detox. It's somewhat similar to Whole30. You cut out all sugar and processed/refined foods. Instead of 30 days it's just 21.
  • Stick to grocery budget. I am finding alternative places to shop such as the local market to help cut down on costs.
  • Stay in the gym.
  • Lose 5 pounds
Alright dear friends. What are your goals this week? Check out The Nectar Collective for the link-up.

Beauty Muse

 Hey lovelies,
So I absolutely love Lupita. I think she is super beautiful.
Her skin is absolute perfection. Seriously, is she using unicorn tears or what?
I know this is a magazine shoot and there is airbrushing and all but I've seen other photos with less editing and her skin is consistently amazing.
Check out a couple more photos of her in the new issue of Marie Claire.

I love how elegant and feminine she is. I guess if I had to pick a woman crush it would have to be this lady right here.
What do you think?

Ten Reasons Why I'm Awesome

You know if you asked me to list some things that I don't like about myself, I could probably rattle off a whole list of things. It would be so easy for me to find the things that are wrong with me, most of them having to do with a physical flaw.

Lately I've realized that I definitely focus way too much on my flaws. Being constantly inundated with images of beautiful women all over the movie screens, magazines and  social media, sometimes it is a challenge to see the beauty within yourself.
I also forget that physical beauty shouldn't take priority over the intrinsic qualities that make someone a beautiful human being.
Yes it is amazing to be told you're beautiful but at the end of the day the physical body changes and beauty fades. There has to be more to you than what is on the surface.

The purpose of this list/post is purely a way for me to acknowledge the things I love about myself and celebrate them. No more self deprecation. So here are the top reasons why I rock.
I am....

  1. smart
  2. kind
  3.  funny and usually fun to be around.
  4. sensitive, which helps me to relate to and empathize with others.
  5. open minded
  6. strong
  7. brave
  8. ambitious
  9. articulate
  10. intuitive
Ok, now it's your turn. If you have never created a list of your awesomeness you need to get on it. Even if it takes a few hours or even days, I encourage you write them down. In those moments when you feel unhappy or insecure pull out your list and look at all the things you have going foe you.

Wednesday Word of Wisdom

Life is journey of lessons and there are always opportunities for redemption.
We constantly make mistakes but the key is using the mistakes to help us to become a better more evolved version of ourselves.
Who you are today isn't who you were yesterday and it isn't who you have to be tomorrow.
Wishing you a week filled with growth and personal enrichment.

Weekly Wishes #32

Hey lovelies,
Happy Labor Day! Hope you are enjoying your day off. I say this with a mixture of envy and happiness for you who are in America.

The kiddies have come! Man I am mentally exhausted. I forgot how frustrating and difficult these early days of Kindergarten 1 are (these are pre-school aged children). They're such babies and to make it even more challenging we don't speak the same language. I am praying for God to help me to display patience. Pray for me or send me positive vibes. I need it.
I already had a pooper and a raspberry blower. It's only day 2 people.  I know eventually we will all love each other but it definitely takes some time. I will have to remember how awesome my kids were when we parted and that I felt this same way at the beginning of my journey with them.

Ok so let's see how I am doing with my goals for this year. This is a progress report on the 3 main goals I had set for 2014.

  • Living a 95% Paleo lifestyle. I was doing an awesome job with this until I went home to NY for the summer. Now I'm back I've gone back to trying to live this goal out. I want it to be a complete lifestyle so much so that I can maintain it even on vacations.
  •  Travel solo. Haven't done this yet. The idea still scares me a little. I am planning on making my December break trip a solo trip. Not sure yet where to go. I was thinking back to Asia somewhere. Any suggestions???
  • Having a more positive attitude and spirit. Still a long way from where I would like to be. It's super hard but by building my faith and relationship with God I know I will get to a much better place.

Alright my loves, lemme see what you working with. Head over to Melyssa's blog and share your progress.
